If you are an industrial Research and Development department member in an industrial corporation and you have read about neutron applications, you may have a concept for a non-destructive measurement application.

What key technologies are required?

The NSD neutron generator is of interest because of its industrial performance, industrial endurance and industrial life cycle costs.

Other technologies from other suppliers - such as gamma detectors, Multi-Channel Analyzers and gamma spectroscopy software, shielding - are advancing. NSD-Fusion can propose some suppliers.

How are you going to create a R&D project?

Most likely some or all of the R&D project will have to be outsourced.

You may want to manage all aspects of the project or you may want to outsource the project management.

You will surely need support in defining the project, the suppliers, the specialist nuclear physics or nuclear engineering resources who can perform the various radiation transport analysis simulation studies.

You may have to respond to your management saying “Do a simple demonstration to show that the measurement is possible. If that works then the full project budget will be released.” Keep in mind that the state of the art today is to use Monte Carlo N Particle (MCNP) modelling to analyse the proposed system FIRST. Simple ad hoc demos arranged by a friendly professor may lead to a totally incorrect assessment. To draw an analogy, MCNP modelling is to neutron applications engineering as CAD is to most types of engineering system design. The initial investment for a feasibility demonstration is best directed to a competent simulation study which describes what the gamma detection system will yield.
