NSD-Fusion GmbH is a growing start-up company located in northern Germany, near Bremen. We are active in a niche area of measurement technology. Our clients are world-wide and include, Universities, Physics and Research Institutes and Industrial Customers. NSD's business is based on its unique longest life, high performance, yet affordable, neutron generator technology.

Production Engineer

The NSD neutron generator utilises technologies in the fields of vacuum, automation, high voltage technologies as well as advanced production processes. New variants are developed to fulfil customer requirements. Engineering to reduce product costs and maintain high quality of production are primary goals; as is serial production and testing cost reduction.

Dealing with suppliers will be a regular function. Production management skills will have many opportunities to be developed.

The production engineer will work closely with the development and nuclear engineers in support of new product realisation.

The position requires an engineer or suitably qualified and experienced technician with mechatronics or specialised technology or production engineering training with a Bachelor or higher professional engineering qualification. Training for the qualification of radiation safety officer to comply with the German StrlSchV will be provided.

Nuclear Chemistry Internship

Planning and execution of systematic testing of Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis spectroscopy in a test cell and a prototype industrial application system.

Our longest lifetime, higher output, neutron generators will replace ever more expensive neutron sources such as radioisotopes and solid target neutron generators. PGNAA or PFNAA is the practical utilisation of the continuous or pulsed output neutrons. Applications range from online elemental analysis of minerals, recycled materials and industrial process measurement, medical whole body analysis, to security screening, Non Destructive Testing for quality assurance to off-line measurements including medical examination tasks. NSD-Fusion is a small company moving beyond the start-up phase. We are expanding our team as our order book for development projects as well as serial production expands.

Opportunity:

In late 2010 and 2011, we are offer an interested student a Thesis Project in the field of PGNAA / PFNAA research and development. Neutron gamma spectroscopy is advancing as more capable technical building block technologies become commercially available. The pulsed neutron performance of the NSD neutron generator will exceed the capabilities of the conventional pulse processing electronics. However faster digital processing electronics and pulse data processing software is entering the market. The real time data processing will enable techniques to be developed for spectrum extraction and gamma peak identification. Conventional technologies have been limited for industrial usage outside of the laboratory. The new fast electronics combine many signal processing functions so that software can be developed to filter the spectrum via the individual time stamped events. The time domain separated spectra will therefore have less noise and more signal. This offers the possibility to achieve far greater industrial system performance.

The challenge of this approach is to progressively research the capabilities and characteristics of the new technologies and then plan and implement progressive development steps that realise marketable systems. As customers request support for specific projects the priorities will be determined by these early business opportunities. The growth of the diverse range of applications will lead to opportunities to follow the evolution of one or more systems as they move from prototype, field evaluation, certification, marketing, serial production, distribution, maintenance and progressive improvement during the product life cycle.

  • Routine Neutron Generator Operations and experiment data management
  • Data Analysis PGNAA
  • Data reduction using a new type of Multi Channel Analyser software and hardware and using a spectrum peak matching software tool
  • Spectrum processing
  • Background subtraction
  • Software requirements definition for enhancement of the tools
  • Examination of the capabilities of a candidate spectrum analysis software where the source code is available.
  • Formal software functional requirements specification
  • Testing of the modified software.
  • Experiment planning
  • Functional specification of an automated real time or near real time system for PGNAA of sample material in a first prototype system.
  • Work in a small team that will realise a prototype analyser for bulk scrap steel elemental analysis.
  • Follow-on work for variants of such a system.

You will be working with a highly motivated team of Engineers and Physicists. English is the common working language. Knowledge of German language may be an advantage but is not necessarily required. Report writing will be in English so a fluent ability to communicate in written and spoken English is essential.
