Example: Clustered High Intensity Neutron Generator
Research and teaching fission reactors with little or no thermal power output are being phased out as they reach end of economic life or are forced to close by more restrictive regulations.
Alternatives may include:
- High energy particle accelerators with their high operating costs
- "Sealed tube" neutron generators of the beam on solid target miniature accelerator type with their short servicing interval of a few thousands hours of operation with degradation and a core component replacement cost of ~50% of the complete neutron generator set price.
- The NSD clustered neutron generator
Conservative projections for performance of a single NSD reaction chamber reach 1x1010 DT n/s. This depends on the customer specified length of the neutron emission zone. Further improvements of the specific performance are expected.
By clustering 10 such reaction chambers the output and high flux zone will increase by a factor of 10.
The price of the NSD-Fusion neutron generator system will not increase by a factor of 10!
The Multi-Head system approach keeps sub-system cost growth at a minimum.
