This diagram shows how the line source neutron generator can replace two or more point sources in a typical conveyor belt application for online prompt gamma neutron activation analysis.

The maximum total neutron output may be reduced; thus reducing the shielding requirement.

The line source enables a more uniform irradiation of the target material. A "wall source" is also available - see Geometry.

After 2.5 years (22,000 hours) the ²⁵²Cf neutron source will have decayed to about half of its original activity. Replacement and safe reprocessing or top-up servicing will be necessary.

The NSD line source neutron generator will still be running at the original neutron output rate. The plasma-gas target is continuously renewed. Other neutron generators, which have solid target technology, will have been renewed at least five times.

Experience with the Mk0 development neutron generator which was operated for 7000 hours, before the order to switch it off, gives us the confidence to offer such long life.
